Revelation Ch 2 (Monday of the First Week of Advent)

“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.

“To the angel of the church in Smyrna write:

These are the words of him who is the First and the Last, who died and came to life again. I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.

“To the angel of the church in Pergamum write:

These are the words of him who has the sharp, double-edged sword. I know where you live—where Satan has his throne. Yet you remain true to my name. You did not renounce your faith in me, not even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death in your city—where Satan lives.

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.

“To the angel of the church in Thyatira write:

These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze. I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’

To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give that one the morning star. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Commentary

Each letter begins with an emphatic reference to the heavenly Jesus as its author, showing that these letters were as authentic a communication from the LORD as the other visions and prophecies in the book.

Each letter begins with a description of the one who sends it. The Man in the midst of the seven lamps is described in some detail as a human figure whose face shines like the sun. He has white hair, fiery eyes, feet like burnished bronze and a voice like many waters. He is dressed like the high priest, with a two-edged sword in his mouth and seven stars in his right hand. He proclaims himself the First and the Last, the Living One who has died and is alive for evermore. He has the keys of Death and Hades. Each of the seven letters begins with similar descriptions of the LORD, and most, but not all of them, correspond to the description of the Man among the lamps. The details at the head of each oracle relate in some way to the oracle itself, that is, each picture of the LORD defines what his followers should do and be.

The seven individual letters, however, are not in the form of letters; they are oracles delivered in the style of the Hebrew prophets and reveal John as a prophet.

John addresses the leaders of the seven churches as the royal priesthood; each is described as the angel of his church and the oracle is to him personally. The seven oracle-letters were combined with the Book of  Visions; in other words the visions are important for understanding the situation in the churches.

The angel of the church at Ephesus is promised 'To him who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God' (2.7). Adam and Eve had been barred from the fruit of the tree of life, as punishment for their disobedience. Eating the fruit would have given them eternal life (Gen. 3.22).

The angel of the church at Smyrna, which is to face tribulation and imprisonment, is promised a crown of life (2.10). The crown, Stephanos, is described by James: 'Blessed is the man who endures trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him' (Jas 1.12). Peter exhorted the church elders to tend their flocks: 'And when the chief Shepherd is manifested you will obtain the unfading crown of glory' (1 Pet. 5.4).

The angel of the church at Pergamum is promised the hidden manna, the food which the Israelites ate during their forty years in the wilderness (Exod. 16.31-36)….The angel of the church at Pergamum is also promised the gift of a white stone, inscribed with a secret name known only to himself. The letters were sent with the visions which describe the Word of God riding out from heaven (c.f. Wisd 18.15), with a name known only to himself inscribed on his diadem (19.12), and since he is the heavenly warrior priest and the name is on his diadem, it must be a form of the sacred Name.

The angel of the church at Thyatira is promised power over the nations, using words from Psalm 2, a coronation psalm: 'You shall rule them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel'.

Vincenti dato edere de ligno vitae quod est in paradiso Dei mei.  Manna absconditum et calculus candidum et in calculo nomen novum scriptum.  Alleluia.  Qui vicerit non laedetur a morte secunda.  Vestietur vestimentis albis et non delebo nomen eius de libro vitae.  Alleluia.

To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.  To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it.  Alleluia.  The one who is victorious will not be hurt at all by the second death.  The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life.  Alleluia.

Collect

Lord our God,
keep your servants alert and watchful
as we await the return of Christ your Son,
so that when he comes and knocks at the door
he may find us vigilant in prayer,
with songs of praise on our lips.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.
