August 1

The Lord has written us in His hands with His own blood. Therefore we should allow nothing to disquiet us, for He arranges and disposes everything with these very hands which were nailed to the Cross as a proof of His love for us. St. Alphonsus Liguori

August 2

Because we ourselves are unable to atone for  so much wrong, we unite ourselves to the infinite merits of our Savior Jesus.  Receive His Divine Blood as it mystically flows from His Holy Wounds,  and offer it to the Father in perfect atonement for the sins of the world. St. Peter Julian Eymard

August 3

O Jesus, because You have so incomprehensible a love for us that You want us to have a share with You in the salvation of souls, You want to do nothing without us. You, the Creator of the universe, wait for the prayer of a poor little soul to save other souls redeemed like it at the price of Your blood. St. Thérèse of Lisieux

August 4

It is without doubt very humiliating for the good God to come into our hearts, but it is to find there a soul that He loves, that He has bought at the cost of His Blood. St. John Vianney

August 5

For all thy wonderful dispensation which is towards us we give thee thanks and glorify thee without ceasing in thy Church redeemed by the precious blood of thy Christ, with open mouths and unveiled faces offering glory and honour and thanksgiving and adoration to thy living and holy and life-giving Name, now and at all times and for ever and ever. Sts. Addai and Mari

August 6

“Hear Him,” unhesitatingly, in whom I am throughout well pleased, and by whose preaching I am manifested, by whose humiliation I am glorified; because he is the Truth and the Life, he is my Power and Wisdom. “Hear Him,” whom the mysteries of the Law have foretold, whom the mouths of prophets have sung. “Hear Him,” who redeems the world by his blood, who binds the devil, and carries off his chattels, who destroys the bond of sin, and the compact of the transgression.... Why do you tremble at being redeemed? Why do you fear to be healed of your wounds?....for it is unworthy that you should fear in the Saviour's Passion what by his good gift you shall not have to fear even at your own end. Pope St. Leo the Great

August 7

Look down, O Lord, from Your sanctuary, from Your dwelling in heaven on high and behold this sacred Victim which our great High Priest, Your Holy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, offers up to You for the sins of His brethren and be appeased despite the multitude of our sins.   Behold, the voice of the Blood of Jesus, our Brother, cries to You from the cross.   Listen, O Lord.   Be appeased, O Lord.   Hearken and do not delay for Your own sake, O my God;  for Your Name is invoked upon this city and upon Your people and deal with us according to Your mercy. Amen. St. Cajetan

August 8

The Blood Divine has rendered us participators of Christ: it is our part not to squander, as though it were worthless, this immense treasure, this initial incorporation which unites us to Christ, the divine Head; but let us abandon ourselves, without fear and without reserve, to the energy of this precious leaven whose property it is to transform our whole being into Him. Dom Prosper Guéranger

August 9

The way to the interior life as well as to the choirs of blessed spirits who sing the eternal Sanctus is Christ. His blood is the curtain through which we enter into the Holiest of Holies, the Divine Life. In baptism and in the sacrament of reconciliation, his blood cleanses us of our sins, opens our eyes to eternal light, our ears to hearing God's word. It opens our lips to sing his praise, to pray in expiation, in petition, in thanksgiving, all of which are but varying forms of adoration, i.e., of the creature's homage to the Almighty and All-benevolent One. St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein)

August 10

“Try me, see if you have chosen an unworthy minister for the distribution of the Lord's blood. Will you refuse to admit me to the divine mysteries of being your companion in shedding blood?” St. Lawrence to Pope Sixtus II

August 11

I behold the Lord. I see His outstretched hands. I see the blood from His wounds. I see the love in the eyes of Jesus. I see His gracious acceptance of me. St. Clare of Assisi

August 12

We need never part from one another, we whom the very blood of Our Lord—that is to say, His love, through the merits of His blood—binds and unites together. St. Francis de Sales to St. Jane Francis de Chantal

August 13

Noah’s ark was a symbol of the Christ  who was expected. For that ark was the means of the salvation of Noah and his sons, and also of the cattle, the wild beasts, and the birds. And Christ, too, when He suffered on the cross, delivered us from accusations and sins, and washed us in His own blood most pure. St. Hippolytus of Rome

August 14

You come to me and unite yourself intimately to me under the form of nourishment. Your Blood now runs in mine, your Soul, Incarnate God, compenetrates mine, giving courage and support. What miracles! Who would have ever imagined such! St. Maximilian Kolbe

August 15

While the Blessed Virgin is fulfilling in the most affectionate manner her maternal duties on behalf of those redeemed by the blood of Christ, the minds and the hearts of her children are being vigorously aroused to a more assiduous consideration of her prerogatives. Ven. Pope Pius XII

August 16

The Precious Blood of Christ is the symbol of God’s justice and loving kindness toward us. It is the symbol and basis of our hope; the source of our life. St. Cyril of Jerusalem

August 17

When we go before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament we represent the one in the world who is in most need of God’s Mercy. We stand in behalf of the one in the world who does not know Christ and who is farthest away from God and we bring down upon their soul the Precious Blood of The Lamb. Pope St. John Paul II

August 18

In the midst of the shedding of so much blood by human hatred, by the greed to possess and the passion for honor, our Mother the Church desires that we look on that other blood, divine blood shed for love, out of desire to give itself, for the highest ambition of making us happy.  The blood of hatred washed in the blood of love.  St. Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga

August 19

Through the Sacrament of Penance, Christ applies his Precious Blood to our souls to cleanse and purify them from sin. The Sacrament of Penance is, as it were, a spiritual blood-bath wherein Christ washes us whenever we will. St. John Eudes

August 20

To be the better heard, not only does the Lord Himself cry aloud, but His Blood cries with a terrible voice to make even the deaf hear. Its pouring forth is its cry. St. Bernard of Clairvaux

August 21

It was for this that Christ founded the Church, gaining it at the price of His blood, and made it the depositary of His doctrine and His laws, bestowing upon it at the same time an inexhaustible treasury of graces for the sanctification and salvation of men and women. Pope St. Pius X

August 22

Remember, O most gracious Queen of Martyrs, Our Lady of the Precious Blood, that never was it known that any of your children, redeemed by the Blood of your Son, sought your intercession and was left unaided. Trusting in the power of the Precious Blood, O Handmaid of the Redeemer, I fly to you my Queen and my Mother, and in the bitterness of my sorrow, I place myself at your feet. O Mother of Jesus Crucified, unite my prayers with yours, obtain for me the merciful bounty of the Divine Blood. As I kneel beneath the Cross, O Mother of sorrows, hear and answer me. Amen.

August 23

Love even the most abandoned: love whatever faith in Christ remains in them: if they have lost this, love their virtues; if these have gone, love the holy likeness they bear, love the blood of Christ through which you trust they are redeemed. St. Ignatius Loyola

August 24

Happy the person who is more and more enriched with the treasures we have in the application of the Blood of Jesus Christ. To the extent that we apply it we shall advance in the ranks of heavenly glory. St. Gaspar del Bufalo

August 25

This blood, which flowed from its source in the secret recesses of Christ’s heart, gave the sacraments of the Church power to confer the life of grace, and for those who already live in Christ was a draught of living water welling up to eternal life. St. Bonaventure

August 26

The blood which flows from sincere, total renunciation of self, from humble, generous acceptance of everything that mortifies, breaks, and destroys our pride: this is the blood which Jesus asks us to unite with His! Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene

August 27

The Church was spiritually joined to Christ, receiving at present the Blood of her Spouse as a precious dowry, and later to receive the dowry of his kingdom. St Caesarius of Arles

August 28

O God, you know my unskillfulness and my infirmity: teach me and heal me. He your only One, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, has redeemed me with his blood. Let not the proud speak evil of me, for I think upon the price of my redemption, I eat it and drink it and give it to others to eat and drink. St. Augustine of Hippo

August 29

John the Baptist’s blood was shed before the blood of the Lord, the immortal chalice. Because it was needful that the Forerunner of the Light, who with his radiant birth from a barren mother illumined everyone on earth, should become an effulgent herald also to those who were below the earth, that is in Hell. St. Theodore the Studite

August 30

It is impossible to despair of one’s own salvation after the sacrifice of Calvary. If the blood of the lawful victims of the Jewish Temple possessed such efficacy, of how much greater power will not be his Blood, who, inflamed with the fervour of the Paraclete, offered himself wholly to the sanctity and justice of the Father for the redemption of the world? Each time, then, that we raise our eyes to the image of our crucified Saviour and look upon those wounds and that Blood, let us say to him with loving confidence: “My merits, O Lord, consist only in those wounds which thou hast suffered for me.” Bl. Ildefonso Schuster

August 31

As due by many titles I resign
Myself to thee, O God. First I was made
By Thee; and for Thee, and when I was decay'd
Thy blood bought that, the which before was Thine.  John Donne
