January 01, 2022
Fr. John Colacino C.PP.S.

(Every month during 2022 I will be posting a daily quotation on the Precious Blood,

where possible drawn from the writings of a saint or blessed commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on that day

or else in connection with a feast day or liturgical season)

January

Jan 1

On this the Eighth Day since the Birth of our Emmanuel, let us consider the great mystery which the Gospel tells us was accomplished in his divine Flesh–the Circumcision. On this day, the earth sees the first-fruits of that Blood-shedding, which is to be its Redemption, and the first sufferings of that Divine Lamb, who is to atone for our sins. Dom Prosper Gueranger

Jan 2

A few drops of blood renew the whole world, and do for all people what the rennet does for the milk: joining us and binding us together. St. Gregory Nazianzen

In those ancient sacrificial victims the body and blood of Christ were prefigured: the body which the sinless one would offer as propitiation for our sins, and the blood which he would pour out for our forgiveness. St. Fulgentius of Ruspe

Jan 4

Let me kiss the path of Mount Calvary sprinkled with your blood since it is that path alone which leads me to you. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Jan 5

O my Jesus, though I am poor in so many ways and so ignorant, I have been chosen as a shepherd of Thy sheep. Give me an ever increasing love for those souls redeemed by Thy precious Blood, that I may labor at their salvation in wisdom, patience and holiness. St. John Nepomucene Neumann

Jan 6

The ingratitude of humankind demands that devout lovers of Jesus be  involved in promoting perpetual adoration of the Divine Precious Blood of the Savior. St. Gaspar del Bufalo

Jan 7

Look then on Jesus, the author and preserver of faith: in complete sinlessness he suffered, and at the hands of those who were his own, and was numbered among the wicked. As you drink the cup of the Lord Jesus (how glorious it is!), give thanks to the Lord, the giver of all blessings.  St. Raymond of Peñafort

Jan 8

Had there been no cross, Christ could not have been crucified. Had there been no cross, life itself could not have been nailed to the tree. And if life had not been nailed to it, there would be no streams of immortality pouring from Christ’s side, blood and water for the world’s cleansing. The legal bond of our sin would not be cancelled, we should not have attained our freedom, we should not have enjoyed the fruit of the tree of life, and the gates of paradise would not stand open. Had there been no cross, death would not have been trodden underfoot, nor hell despoiled.  St. Lawrence Justinian

Jan 9

Freed from our bonds, when through the sacrament of baptism we come unto the Sign of the Lord, we renounce the Devil and all his angels, whom before we served, that we should now serve them no longer, being delivered by the Blood and Name of Christ. St. Pacian of Barcelona

Jan 10

It is good and beneficial to communicate every day, and to partake of the holy body and blood of Christ. St. Basil the Great

Jan 11

Altars are not sprinkled with the blood of dumb beasts anymore; they are consecrated by the precious blood of Christ. Instead of the blood of bulls and goats, priests and deacons minister the word of God through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Origen of Alexandria

Jan 12

Daily we see and hear, we discern the cross of Christ; daily we contemplate afresh the passion of Christ, daily the body and blood of Christ is offered before us and for us, daily we hear the gospel of Christ.  St. Aelred of Rievaulx

Jan 13

Because Christ, who bore our sins, also bore us all, we see that people are understood in the water, but in the wine the blood of Christ is shown. But when water is mixed with wine in the chalice, the people are united to Christ, and the people of the believers is bound and joined to Him in whom they believe. Whence nothing can separate the Church from Christ. St. Hilary of Poitiers

Jan 14

Sinners have encrusted their heart in a diamond rock that can never be shattered except by blood. Still, I tell you, in spite of their hardness, let them while they still have time and freedom to choose to seek the blood of my son and with that same hand let them pour it over the hardness of their heart: It will shatter the diamond and they will know the fruit of that blood which was paid out for them. St. Catherine of Siena

Engrave your sweet name indelibly on my heart, O my Beloved, with the stylus of your love. Write it with tongues of flame, purple with love, That I may never forget you who gave your life’s blood for me. St. Arnold Janssen

Jan 16

The truth is that when Christ bought us at such great cost to himself - at the cost indeed of his most precious blood - it was not with the intention of making us his slaves; his purpose was to create a royal race of priests to the honour of God his Father.  Rupert of Deutz

Jan 17

Before the crucifixion the disciples did nothing, or if they did it was not known; but after the crucifixion they accomplished marvels, that is to say, after the sacred blood had cancelled the bond that stood against us; after that blood had cleansed us from our uncleanness.  Eusebius of Emessa

Jan 18

Your brothers and sisters are hungry and in need; they may be racked with anxiety, hard pressed by some creditor. They have no money; you have. They are your brothers and sisters; you were ransomed together, bought at the same price, all redeemed by the blood of Christ. See if you cannot have pity on them, you who possess this world’s goods. St. Augustine of Hippo

Jan 19

Whose blood has now the power to redeem them, when Christ shed his own blood for the redemption of all? Is there anyone’s blood comparable to the blood of Christ? St. Ambrose of Milan

By the power of this divine and infinitely precious blood the wounds we continually inflict upon our souls are healed, the fire of our passions is extinguished, peace is restored to us, and merit is imparted to our actions.  Bl. Basil Anthony Marie Moreau

Jan 21

The blood of Christ poured out through love is so ardent that it enflames those who meditate deeply on it making them so forgetful of self that they consider even disdain a joy, and regard as little those things that afflict the body. Thomas a Kempis

Jan 22

The blood of Christ, while it reveals the grandeur of the Father’s love, shows how precious human beings are in God’s eyes and how priceless the value of human life. Pope St. John Paul II

Jan 23

We come to the baptismal font as to the Red Sea. Moses was the leader in saving Israel; Christ was the leader in redeeming humanity. The former left Egypt; the latter left the world. The Egyptians pursued the Israelites; sin pursued human beings. The sea is colored by the red of its shore; baptism is consecrated with the blood of Christ. Saint Ildephonsus of Toledo

St. Paul the Apostle

Lord, overshadow your holy Church which has been redeemed by your blood; cause to dwell in it your true peace which you gave to your holy apostles; bind her children in holy bonds of indissoluble love. St. Isaac the Syrian

I turn to him who is everything, and in the name of his Blood, of his Love, I implore him that he himself bring all hearts under his gentle sway to make of them so many springs of living water where he may quench his burning thirst. Ven. Mother Catherine Aurelia

Jan 28

Lord Jesus, loving Pelican of heaven, cleanse me, a sinner, with your Blood; for a single drop can save the whole world from all its sin. St. Thomas Aquinas

Jan 29

The Israelites slaughtered a lamb from the flock and by means of its blood were kept safe from the destroyer; by the blood of the well-beloved Son we have been rescued from the corrupt works we used to do. St. Aphraates of Persia

Jan 30

Because of you, Jesus Christ, because of the blood you shed for us, we stand before God’s face. It is your sacrifice, your immolation, that wins our every moment of glory and happiness. To you, the Lamb that was slain, be all honour and praise and thanksgiving!  Bl. Columba Marmion
