Month of the Holy Rosary (Oct 16-17)
October 16, 2025
[This fourth set of mysteries, "Mysteries of Suffering," expand on aspects of the Lord's passion latent within the Sorrowful Mysteries].
First Mystery: Prophecy (Oct 16)
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. (Mk 8:31)
Jesus was teaching his disciples, and said to them, “The Son of Man is being handed over to the hands of men, and they will kill him; and when he is killed, on the third day he will rise again.” (Mk 9:31)
But they didn’t understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him. (Mk 9:32)
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you. (Mt 16:22)
But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.” (Mt 16:23)
They were on the way, going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus was going in front of them, and they were amazed; and those who followed were afraid. He again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were going to happen to him. (Mk 10:32)
“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes. They will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles. (Mk 10:33)
They will mock him, spit on him, scourge him, and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.” (Mk 10:34)
For the Son of Man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mk 10:45)
When Jesus had finished all these words, he said to his disciples, 2 “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.” (Mt 26:1-2)
Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “….it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,. (Jn 11:49-51)
Lord our God,
in your mysterious wisdom
you fill out the Passion of Christ
through the suffering that his members endure
in the many trials of this life.
As you chose to have the mournful Mother
stand by your Son in his agony on the Cross,
grant that we too may bring love and comfort
to our brothers and sisters in distress.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
(Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Mary at the Foot of the Cross I)
Second Mystery: Betrayal (Oct 17)
Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went away to the chief priests, that he might deliver him to them. (Mk 14:10)
They, when they heard it, were glad, and promised to give him money. He sought how he might conveniently deliver him. (Mk 14:11)
During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him. (Jn 13:2)
Jesus was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.” (Jn 13:21b)
When he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” (Jn 13:26b-27)
There was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples. (Jn 18:1b)
Judas, one of the twelve, came—and with him a multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. (Mk 14:33b)
Now he who betrayed him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I will kiss, that is he. Seize him, and lead him away safely.” (Mk 14:34)
But Jesus said to him, “Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” (Lk 22:48)
Yes, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate bread with me, has lifted up his heel against me. (Ps 41:9)
Lord our God,
you placed at the side of your suffering Son
his Mother to suffer with him,
so that the human race,
deceived by the wiles of the devil,
might become a new and resplendent creation.
Grant that your people may put aside their inheritance of sin
and put on the newness of life won
by Christ the Redeemer.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.
