Third Mystery: Trial (Oct 18)

First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. (John 18:13)

Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching. (John 18:19)

Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. (John 18:24)

Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. (John 18:28a)

Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”  (John 18:29)

Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” (John 18:31a)

Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” (John 18:33)

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world.” (John 18:36a)

Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” (John 18:37)

Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him.” (John 18:38)

Lord God,
you decreed that the Mother of your Son
should stand by his Cross, suffering with him.
Safeguard in your family
the fruits of your great work of redemption
and in your goodness
make them grow daily more and more.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Fourth Mystery: Mockery (Oct 19)

He was despised as one from whom men hide their face;  and we didn’t respect him. (Is 53:3c)

Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, “Prophesy!” The officers struck him with the palms of their hands. (Mk 14:65)

They spoke many other things against him, insulting him. (Lk 22:65)

They clothed him with purple; and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him. They began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”(Mk 15:17-18)

They struck his head with a reed and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him. (Mk 15:19)

When they had mocked him, they took the purple cloak off him, and put his own garments on him. They led him out to crucify him. (Mk 15:20)

Those who passed by [the cross] blasphemed him, wagging their heads and saying, “Ha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!” (Mk 15:29-30)

Likewise, also the chief priests mocking among themselves with the scribes said, “He saved others. He can’t save himself.  Let the Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him.”  (Mk 15:31-32)

The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar, and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” (Lk 23:36-37)

One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!” (Lk 23:39)

Lord our God, through the Precious Blood of your Son
you reconciled the world to yourself
and at the foot of his Cross
you chose the Blessed Virgin Mary
to be the Mother of reconciliation for sinners;
grant through her intercession
that we may obtain pardon for our sins.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen

Fifth Mystery: Agony (Oct 20)

When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. (Mark 15:33)

The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. (Lk 23:45)

One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? (Luke 23:39-40)

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” (Luke 23:42-43)

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. (John 19:25)

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” (John 19:26-27a)

After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)

A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. (John 19:29)

At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34)

Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last. (Luke 23:46)

O God, give your Church the grace
to imitate devoutly the Blessed Virgin Mary in contemplating the Passion of Christ,
grant, we pray, through her intercession,
that we may cling more firmly each day to your Only Begotten Son
and come at last to the fullness of his grace.
Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
