Pentecost Novena II (May 24-27)
May 24, 2023
Fr. John Colacino C.PP.S.
Day 6

V/. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

R/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Scripture

This is the one who came by water and blood- Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. We accept human testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. (1 John 5: 6-9)

Prayer

Holy Spirit, come into my heart;
draw it to Thee by Thy power, O my God,
and grant me charity with filial fear.
Preserve me, O beautiful Love, from every evil thought;
warm me, inflame me with Thy dear love,
and every pain will seem light to me.
My Father, my sweet Lord, help me in all my actions.
Jesus, love, Jesus, love.  Amen. (St. Catherine of Siena)

Day 7

V/. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

R/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Scripture

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.  There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.  There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.  To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. (1 Corinthians 12: 4-11)

Prayer

Holy Spirit,
Divine Consoler,
I adore You as my true God,
with God the Father and God the Son.
I adore You and unite myself to the adoration
You receive from the angels and saints.

I give You my heart
and I offer my ardent thanksgiving
for all the grace which You never cease to bestow on me.

O Giver of all supernatural gifts,
who filled the soul of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother of God, with such immense favors,
I beg You to visit me with Your grace
and Your love and to grant me the gift of holy fear,
so that it may act on me as a check to prevent me
from falling back into my past sins,
for which I beg pardon.

Grant me the gift of piety,
so that I may serve You for the future with increased fervor,
follow with more promptness Your holy inspirations,
and observe your divine precepts with greater
fidelity.

Grant me the gift of knowledge,
so that I may know the things of God and,
enlightened by Your holy teaching, may walk,
without deviation, in the path of eternal
salvation.

Grant me the gift of fortitude,
so that I may overcome courageously all the assaults of the devil,
and all the dangers of this world which threaten the salvation of my soul.

Grant me the gift of counsel,
so that I may choose what is more conducive to my
spiritual advancement
and may discover the wiles and snares of the tempter.

Grant me the gift of understanding,
so that I may apprehend the divine mysteries
and by contemplation of heavenly things detach my thoughts
and affections from the vain things of this miserable
world.

Grant me the gift of wisdom,
so that I may rightly direct all my actions,
referring them to God as my last end;
so that, having loved Him and served Him in this life,
I may have the happiness of possessing Him eternally in the next.  Amen. (St. Alphonsus Liguori)

Day 8

V/. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

R/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Scripture

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)

Prayer

We beg the all-merciful Father through Thee,
his only-begotten Son made man for our sake,
crucified and glorified for us,
to send upon us from His treasure-house the Spirit of sevenfold grace,
Who rested upon Thee in all His fullness:

        the spirit of wisdom,
        enabling us to relish the fruit of the tree of life, which is indeed thyself;

        the gift of understanding:
        to enlighten our perceptions;

        the gift of prudence,
        enabling us to follow in Thy footsteps;

        the gift of strength:
        to withstand our adversary’s onslaught;

        the gift of knowledge:
        to distinguish good from evil by the light of Thy holy teaching;

        the gift of piety:
        to clothe ourselves with charity and mercy;

        the gift of fear:
        to withdraw from all ill-doing and live quietly in awe of Thy eternal majesty.

These are the things for which we petition.
Grant them for the honor of Thy Holy Name,
to which, with the Father and the Holy Ghost,
be all honor and glory, thanksgiving, renown,
and Lordship for ever and ever.   Amen.  (St. Bonaventure)

Day 9

V/. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love.

R/. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Scripture

The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let the one who hears say, "Come!" Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17)

Prayer

O God, Love, Holy Spirit, Love of the Father and the Son and their substantial will, dwell in us and set us in order so that your will may be done in us.  Let your will be our will, so that being ready to do the will of the Lord, our God, we may find his law and his order in the midst of our heart.  Enlighten the eyes of our heart so that we may gaze upon the unchanging light of your truth and the form of our mutability and the changeful inconstancy of of our will may be corrected.  May your bride, our soul, by loving you come to understand in your love what she is called to do with herself.  Rather, by your dwelling in her, you, the God who is himself your love in her, bring it to pass in  her that she may love you from your very self, O you who are her love!  May you, yourself, in her, love yourself through her, and in her and through her may you cause and order all things according to your very self.  Amen. (William of St. Thierry)
