October 2

Psalm 29:1 Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly powers,

ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.

2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;

bow down before the LORD, majestic in holiness.

Fragment (Hopkins)

The furl of fresh-leaved dogrose down
His cheeks the forth-and-flaunting sun
Had swarthed about with lion-brown
Before the Spring was done

His locks like all a ravel-rope's-end,
With hempen strands in spray—
Fallow, foam-fallow, hanks—fall'n off their ranks,
Swung down at a disarray.

Or like a juicy and jostling shock
Of bluebells sheaved in May
Or wind-long fleeces on the flock
A day off shearing day.

Then over his turnèd temples—here—
Was a rose, or, failing that,
Rough-Robin or five-lipped campion clear
For a beauty-bow to his hat,
And the sunlight sidled, like dewdrops, like dandled diamonds
Through the sieve of the straw of the plait.

Meditation

The word “ecology” contains the prefix “eco,” which derives from the Greek word oikos, signifying “home” or “dwelling.” How unfortunate, then, and indeed how selfish it is that we have reduced its meaning and restricted its application. This world is indeed our home. Yet it is also the home of everyone, just as it is the home of every animal creature and of every form of life created by God. It is a sign of arrogance to presume that we human beings alone inhabit this world. Moreover, it is a sign of arrogance to imagine that only the present generation enjoys its resources. (Bartholomew I)

Musical Selection

Creator God who carved the canyons with a painless breath
Who sends the rains on unmanned fields and tucks the sun to rest
The dawn is clothed with brilliance and adorned in full array
Reflections of the Father’s love put wildly on display

Sovereign One who fashioned oceans, deep by whisper strong
Who rends the water from the land and lends the depths her song
The fullness of the sky and sea in reverence do they stand
To testify the sovereignty and goodness of Your hand

Hallelujah, all creation sing
Holy, holy, glory to the King

Eternal One who knows no turning, faithful through all things
Unbroken praise and righteousness, adorn Your matchless name

Prayer

Source of all life, we give thanks to you for your wondrous creation made manifest in the environment that surrounds us; strengthen us in the mission of stewardship and care towards nature, the work of your hands, encouraging us to preserve life in all its precious forms. All this we ask through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Source: Rev. Luiz Coelho, Episcopal Church of Brazil, 2018).
