This second set of mysteries, the "Mysteries of Hiddenness," invite reflection on aspects of revelation which are not readily apparent
yet are part of that disclosure of "the mystery that has been kept hidden from ages and generations, but has now been revealed to his saints" (Col 1:26).

First Mystery: Christ Hidden in Prophecy (Oct 6)

Your ancestor Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad.’ Then the Jews said to him, ‘You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, before Abraham was, I am.’ (Jn 8:56-58)

Death exercised dominion from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who is a type of the one who was to come. (Rom 5:14)

Our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. (1 Cor. 10:1-4)

All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:  ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’, which means, ‘God is with us.’ (Mt 1:22-23)

Jesus left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: ‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’ (Mt 4:13-16)

Many crowds followed him, and he cured all of them, and he ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
‘Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased. (Mt 12:15-18)

But he answered them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was for three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth. (Mt 12:39-40)

The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here. (Mt 12:42)

Then he said to them, ‘These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ (Lk 24:44)

Now to God--who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery that was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed, and through the prophetic writings is made known to all the Gentiles, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith--to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory for ever! Amen. (Rom 16:25-27)

O God, who, fulfilling the promise made to our Fathers,
chose the Blessed Virgin Mary
the noble daughter of Zion,
grant that we may follow her example,
for her humility was pleasing to you
and her obedience profitable to us.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary; Mary, Chosen Daughter of Israel)

Second Mystery: Christ Hidden in the Womb of the Virgin (Oct 7)

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for eyou have found favor with God. (Lk 1:30)

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (Lk 1:31)

And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” (Lk 1:34)

And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.  For nothing will be impossible with God. (Lk 1:36-37)

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 She called out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (Lk 1:41-42)

Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. (Mt 1:20)

When eight days were completed for his circumcision, Joseph he was named Jesus, the name given him by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. (Lk 2:21)

You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother's womb. (Ps 119:13)

On you I depend since birth; from my mother's womb you are my strength; my hope in you never wavers. (Ps 71:6)

Yet you drew me forth from the womb, made me safe at my mother's breast. (Ps 22:10)

O God, who willed that at the message of an Angel
your Word should take flesh
in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
grant that we, who pray to you
and believe her to be truly the Mother of God
may be helped by her interceding before you.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Mass of Mary and the Annunciation of the Lord)
